You may be asking yourself, "So how do I even get started on the right track to get to a point where I can begin testing?" Below, you'll find basic steps, and trust me, you'll be testing sooner than you think!

WHERE TO START? FIVE STEPS TO GET YOU MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

DOWNLOAD MY FREE "GET HIRED GOAL CHECKLIST"

This will help guide you through the initial steps as well as keep you motivated as you watch your checklist fill up with each goal you achieve!

GET YOUR EMT LICENSE
  • Most fire departments require EMT certification

  • Enroll in an accredited EMT program (usually 3-6 months)

  • Complete clinical hours

  • Pass the National Registry EMT (NREMT) exam

  • You'll get your CPR cert through the EMT program

PREPARE APPLICATION MATERIALS
  • Create a professional firefighter-specific resume

  • Gather required documents (certifications, school transcripts)

  • Obtain letters of recommendation

  • Clean up social media presence

  • Start networking with current firefighters

MASTER THE TESTING PROCESS
  • Study for the written exam

  • Practice for the oral board interview

  • Complete physical agility testing

  • Pass medical examination

  • Complete psychological evaluation

  • Successfully complete background check

Meet Basic Requirements
  • Be at least 18 years old (21 in some departments)

  • Have a high school diploma or GED

  • Possess a valid driver's license with a clean record

  • Be physically fit and in good health

  • Be able to pass a background check

  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the U.S.

PHYSICAL PREPERATION
  • Train specifically for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

  • Focus on cardiovascular endurance

  • Build functional strength

  • Practice with weighted equipment

  • Consider joining my CPAT geared workout program called "30 days to crush the CPAT

APPLY TO MULTIPLE DEPARTMENTS
  • Research department requirements

  • Submit applications to various jurisdictions

  • Be prepared to travel for testing
